Shirahama Beach: the Best Beach in Kansai

With its white sand, crystal blue water, and rows of palm trees, Shirahama Beach feels more like a tropical island than western Japan. Located on the southern coast of Wakayama Prefecture, Shirahama Beach is famous for its soft white sand, clear water, and laid-back resort atmosphere. It feels more like a tropical island than somewhere in Kansai.

Although most people call it Shirahama Beach, its official name is actually Shirarahama Beach. The town takes its name from the beach, and Shirahama literally means “white beach.”

Shirahama is about a two-hour ride from Osaka on the Kuroshio Limited Express. However, the highway bus is usually much cheaper. The journey from downtown Osaka takes about the same amount of time.

From Shirahama Station, it’s about a 15-minute bus ride to the beach. As soon as you arrive, you’ll be greeted by one of the most beautiful stretches of sand in the Kansai region.

What Makes Shirahama Beach So Beautiful?

Shirahama Beach stretches for about 620 meters from end to end. At first glance, it may seem a little smaller than some other beaches. Since so many hotels and resorts surround the shoreline, it can become quite crowded during the summer season. The swimming season begins surprisingly early during Golden Week and usually continues until around September. On average, around 600,000 people visit Shirahama Beach each year.

What really catches your eye is the brilliant white sand. It’s made of quartz sand containing around 90% silica, which gives it its sparkling appearance. Today, much of the sand is imported from Australia because the amount of naturally deposited sand has decreased significantly over the years. Even so, it’s absolutely stunning and creates a beautiful contrast with the bright blue ocean.

Thanks to the warm ocean currents, you’ll even find tropical fish here, something that’s quite unusual for most of the Kansai region.

Relax at Nanki Shirahama Onsen

If the beautiful beaches weren’t enough to get you to unwind, the area is also famous for its hot springs, known as Nanki Shirahama Onsen. The hot springs have a history dating back to the Nihon Shoki, although the springs mentioned in the ancient chronicle were probably located slightly south of what we now know as Shirahama Beach.

There are numerous hotels throughout Shirahama where you can enjoy these famous hot springs, and many offer open-air baths overlooking the ocean. You’ll also find free footbaths near the beach where you can soak your feet in natural hot spring water after a day of swimming. It’s one of the few places in Kansai where you can enjoy both a beautiful beach and a relaxing onsen in the same trip.

Why You Should Visit Shirahama Beach

In the past, Shirahama, together with Miyazaki in Kyushu, ranked among Japan’s top honeymoon destinations thanks to its tropical scenery and luxury resorts. Although it’s no longer the honeymoon hotspot it once was, Shirahama Beach remains one of the most beautiful beaches in the Kansai region and is well worth a visit.
