JNR 381 Series Yakumo: Old JR West Train

Many years have passed since JR was privatized from JNR (Japan National Railways). After the privatization, many trains were completely renovated, and not many old trains remain, especially in big cities. However, if you travel to the countryside, you can still find some older models. One such example is the 381 Series Yakumo.

381 Series Yakumo

The Yakumo is a limited express train connecting Okayama to Matsue and Izumo in the Sanin region, via Hakubi Line. Unlike many trains in the Sanin area that operate on diesel, the Yakumo is an electric train.

The Hakubi Line traverses a mountainous region, resulting in numerous curves along the route. To enable trains to navigate these curves without needing to slow down, the 381 series was developed in the 1970s to early 1980s. 

The 381 series trains can travel quickly on winding railroads due to their tilting system. In fact, the Yakumo was the first train in Japan to implement this technology. However, many people have been wary of the tilting system because it can cause motion sickness.

Riding the 381 Series Yakumo

Yakumo departs from Okayama for Izumo, making stops at Kurashiki, Niimi, Yonago, and Matsue. The total distance to Izumo is approximately 200 kilometers, and the journey takes about two and a half hours. 

Unfortunately, by the end of 2023, JR plans to replace the old Yakumo with a new version. The current train specifically retains the JNR color scheme, which evokes a sense of nostalgia. Once upon a time, many JR trains in Japan such as Raicho, Konotori, and Hatsukari looked like this. 

The train is quite old, so it shakes, which feels more like a tremor. Some passengers might feel sick because of the tilting system, but we felt completely fine. In fact, nobody in the car appeared to be unwell.

While the 381 series was also used for the limited express Shinano to Nagano and Kuroshio from Osaka to Shirahama, these trains are no longer in operation due to their age and inability to provide a comfortable ride. 

There were “etiquette bags” in the bathroom for people feeling sick. Believe it or not, those bags are for people to throw up and even highway buses used to carry those. 

End of an Era

Near the city of Yonago is the magnificent Mt. Daisen, a prominent icon known for its breathtaking landscapes and rich natural beauty. Nearby, Lake Shinji offers stunning views, especially captivating after a visit to Matsue, where the serene surroundings make for a perfect escape. 

The scenery from the train line that runs through Yakumo is particularly remarkable, showcasing the region’s picturesque vistas and lush greenery!
